German Potato Salad



The traditional German potato salad can be enjoyed at all times, but it is immensely popular during the warm season, a perfect time for picnics and fun. In many regions of Germany potatoes are used abundantly and the German potato salad with its yummy flavor is a hot favorite. The dish is sometimes modified to suit different taste buds. Thus a dash of paprika can lend a fiery flavor or even eggs can be used in the German potato salad.

Ingredients for German Potato Salad

  • 4 big potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 4 bacon slices
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup chopped green onions
  • 1/4 cup white wine vinegar
  • 1/3 cup water
  • Pepper and salt to taste

Preparation of German Potato Salad

A big pot or pan of salted water needs to be boiled first of all. Next potatoes are added and cooked till they become tender yet firm. It would take about 15 minutes. Then the potatoes are drained cooled and sliced or chopped. After this the bacon is placed in a big and deep skillet for cooking over medium to high heat till it becomes brown all over. The bacon is then drained, crumbled into pieces and kept aside. The bacon fat can be kept back. To the skillet the flour, vinegar and water are added. The dressing is cooked in the bacon fat (that was reserved earlier), over medium heat till it thickens. To the skillet potatoes, bacon and green onions are added and stirred so that all they are properly coated with the dressing. It is cooked until well heated and is then seasoned with salt and pepper. The German potato salad tasted best when served warm.

The German potato salad is not only extremely delicious but very filling and can satiate hunger very well.
