Germany's East



Germany's East was formally referred to as German Democratic Republic or GDR, which was a republic of the Europe's central area. At that time Germany's East or East Germany was surrounded by the Baltic Sea on the north, Czechoslovakia on the south, Poland on the east and West Germany on the west. Germany's East and West Germany existed as 2 separate states and after many years they merged to form Germany. Currently Germany's East is really an important destination, attracting a large number of tourists to glimpse the historical and cultural sites, which are full of architectural grandeur.

Destinations in Germany's East

  • Brandenburg, a German state is quite renowned throughout the land for its vast stores of water. There are over 3000 lakes in the area, which welcome all sorts of people to participate in various water sports and activities such as swimming, rowing and even sunbathing.
  • Saxony is the seat of culture, where people from the 4 cardinal directions come to fulfill their intellectual pursuits. In the urban centers of Saxony, such as Leipzig and Dresden, a rich diversity of people and cultures is seen. This part of Germany's East is also famous for its splendid mountains, strange cliff formations, wet marshlands and beautiful heaths.
  • To revel in the sight of unusual Gothic architecture, the ancient Hanseatic towns are the best. Other attractions in this portion of Germany's East are the communist memorials and the historical buildings.
  • Thuringia and its capital Weimar is frequented by tourists for their wellness resorts, hot springs and relaxing spas.
