Nuremberg

One of the most beautiful German Cities, Nuremberg has gained acclamation as one of the best holiday destinations in Germany. Situated on the bank of river Pegnitz, the city boasts of some of the most beautiful spots in Germany. The history of Nuremberg is as fascinating as the city itself. Having faced numerous turmoils during the war period, the city was also a witness to the mass genocide of its own people. Having suffered a lot in the hands of despotism and autocracy, the post-war democratic and liberal government took the reign of justice in its own hands. And with it began the Nuremberg Trials.

Nuremberg Trials

These particular series of trials included the prosecution of top class politicians and leaders who were in some way or the other connected to the the military, political and the economic Nazi comradeship. The trials were held in the city premises of Nuremberg, during the period of 1945 to 1949. The most notable trial included the prosecution of 24 of the most significant leaders of the Nazi despotism. These series of trials were known as the Trial of the Major War Criminals Before the International Military Tribunal or the IMT. Apart from notorious war politicians and despots the judges and the doctors, who had shouldered in sparking off unrest in the city, were also put to trial by the U.S Nuremberg Military Tribunals or the NMT. These Trials have been penned down in numerous documentations and novels that relate to individual experiences. One such novel is the Witness to Nuremberg written by Richard W. Sonnenfeldt.

Witness to Nuremberg

When it comes to discussing the city of Nuremberg, the book by Richard W. Sonnenfeldt called the Witness to Nuremberg is worth mentioning. Written in the first person narrative mode, this book is the memoir of the chief American interpreter at the Nuremberg Trials, which traces back to his birth in Germany, his escape to England, his becoming the chief interpreter representing the American prosecution in the Nuremberg Trials. The memoir further trails off to his experiences with the top leaders in the Nazi regime during the Nuremberg Trials.

Nuremberg Laws

Established and implemented during the Nazi period in Germany, the Nuremberg Laws testified for the roots of the history of the Jewish Genocide in Germany. The clauses and the articles in the body of Nuremberg Laws were evident of the ways the Nazi administration adopted to side line or even go to the extent of eliminating what they called the 'impure blood'. The main clauses that dominated the functionalities of the Nuremberg Laws are:

  • The eligibility criteria that was required for gaining the citizenship of the Third Reich.
  • The Nuremberg Laws emphasized on the purity of the German blood and the ways to keep its honor intact, irrespective of the means.
  • The Nuremberg Laws functioned on a transparent basis and chalked out the rights and the position of the Jews in the German society, which almost catered to nothing.
These three nomenclatures combined to form the Nuremberg Laws.

Having overcome the dark war clouds, the beauty of the city inspires poetic imagination. Home to the princes and dukes, the city reflects the grandeur and the aristocracy of the bygone era. Presently, the comely effect that the city has on its onlooker is in complete contrast to the turmoil that the city has gone through in the past, especially after the bombing by the allied powers in 1945, the buzzing city turned into rubbles.

Presently, Nuremberg is more of an industrial town with hi-tech industrial and commercial sectors. Some of the most important industries that are included in these sectors are the ginger and the handmade toy industries. Apart from being an industrial hub of the country, it is also a popular tourist destination in Europe.
