Situated on the bank of the Innerste river, the city of Hildesheim is the crown of all the German Cities.
Places to visit in Hildesheim
The city contours are beautified by the symmetrical spires, domes and towers of the churches and the cathedrals. The industrial hubs stand in contrast to the historical building, that stand in humble testimony of the bygone era. A walk down the narrow alleys provides the taste of the medieval architecture and ambiance. Some of the important places to visit in the city are:The historic Marketplace, which was considered to be the most beautiful market in the world. After turning into rubbles during the air raids of 1945, the marketplace was resurrected between 1984 to 1990.
Butchers' Guild Museum: Once a beautiful building, known for its unique architecture, it was destroyed during the air raids of 1945. A cultural heritage of the city of Hildesheim and the country as a whole, the facade of the building was richly decorated by colorful paintings and colloquial German proverbs. In commemoration of the past, the resurrected building now houses the famous City Museum and a fabulous restaurant.
Some of the cathedrals in Hildesheim that add to the comeliness of the city are the Romanesque St. Mary's Cathedral. Known for its excuisite bronze doors, the cathedral is noteworthy for its architecture. Once destroyed in the air raids of 1945, the cathedral was brought back to its glory, presently siting itself in the list of World Heritage Sites since 1985. Among UNESCO's World Heritage Sites is also enlisted the name of St. Michael's Church. The cathedral is said to home the world's oldest living rose called the Rosebush. It is considered to be around 1000 years old.
Apart from Town Hall, some of the other sites worth visiting are Tempelhaus and the Wedekindhau, which are both considered to be ancient patrician houses. The Andreaskirche or the St. Andrew's church, which is known for its steeple, the highest in Lower Saxony is also one of the places worth paying a visit. The Roemer-und-Pelizaeus-Museum, on the other hand is known for its collections from all over the world, especially Egypt and Peru.
