Aschaffenburg, Germany

Situated in the south-central Germany, the city of Aschaffenburg, Germany is located at the foot of the Spessart mountains. Lying on the bank of the Main River Aschaffenburg is one of the most beautiful German Cities. Deriving its name from the Aschaff river, that runs through the town, the city cherishes being called the " castle of the ash tree river", which is the etymological meaning of the name.

Bearing the marks of the history and tradition, the city of Aschaffenburg, Germany boasts both of medieval and modern architecture. Some of the important historical buildings and sightseeing spots in Aschaffenburg are:

Johannisburg: It was built by Archbishop Schweikard of Cronberg. Presently, it houses one of the most famous libraries in the world, displaying some of the rich collections of engravings and paintings.

Stiftskirche: This is the cathedral that was founded by the Bavarian Otto. Home to the monuments of the Vischers, it also exhibits the sacrophagus containing the relics of St Margaret. Dating back to the 12th or the 13th century, the cathedral can be considered as the cultural hub of the city.

Some of the other historical places worth visiting are the graveyards of the Beranto Brothers, that of Clemens Brentano and Christian Brentano, who died in the year 1851. Another such name that has lost its historical significance with the passing of time is that of Wilhelm Heinse, whose graveyard can also be seen in the vicinity.

Bearing the harsh memories and the ruins of the 30 years war, the city now is the live exponent, retelling the historical and the traditional legacy of the country.
